A slice of bread goes well with most things—buttered toast in the morning, a sandwich for lunch, or even just a quick snack. It’s one of those versatile staples that you always seem to have on hand. But what if you’re following a keto diet and bread is off-limits?

Never fear! There are plenty of low-carb alternatives you can use to make keto bread. Almond flour, coconut flour, and psyllium husk powder are all great substitutes for traditional wheat flour. And with a little creativity you can even make keto bread that tastes just as good as the real thing.

Below you’ll find our top keto bread recipes that are sure to satisfy your cravings. But first, let’s review our low-carb flour substitutes.

How To Make Keto Bread -The Ingredients

Wheat and other grains are high in carbs, which can kick you out of ketosis. With that in mind, what can you use to make keto bread?

1. Almond Flour

Almond flour is made from finely ground almonds and is a popular alternative to wheat flour. It’s perfect for baking as it gives baked goods a moist and dense texture. Because it;s gluten-free, it doesn’t rise as much as wheat flour, so you may need to add extra leavening agents to your recipe.

When substituting almond flour for wheat flour, you’ll need to use less of it as it is more dense. For every cup (120 grams) of wheat flour, you can use ¾ cup (90 grams) of almond flour.

2. Coconut Flour

Coconut flour is made from cold-pressed coconut meat that has been dried and ground into a fine powder. It’s a good source of fiber and is lower in carbs than almond flour.

It also has a coconut flavor that you may or may not want in your keto bread. Coconut flour is also gluten-free so it won’t rise as much as wheat flour.

When substituting coconut flour for wheat flour, you’ll need to use less of it as it is more absorbent. For every cup (120 grams) of wheat flour, you use ¼ cup (30 grams) of coconut flour. You may also need to add more liquid to your recipe as coconut flour absorbs moisture.

3. Ground Psyllium Husk

Psyllium husk is a type of soluble fiber that comes from the Plantago ovata plant. It’s often used as a laxative or to treat constipation. But it can also be used as a low-carb flour substitute as it helps bread to rise and gives it a chewy texture.

Psyllium husk powder is the best form to use in baking as the whole psyllium husks can be difficult to work with. When substituting psyllium husk powder for wheat flour, use a 1:1 ratio. That means for every cup (120 grams) of wheat flour, use a cup (120 grams) of psyllium husk powder.
