Belonging is a fundamental human need. We look for socialization, seek out groups to join, and search for a connection to those who understand us.
As you know, my journey to a Better Me wasn’t a straight line, and it took a long time, with its ups and downs, and plenty of setbacks... But what I discovered is that being a part of a team of like-minded individuals working towards the same goal is vital, if not indispensable, for success.
Once I connected to ladies also trying to lose weight, I really felt like the hardships I was faced with weren’t unique, and weren’t unusual. This knowledge empowered me, and I felt more determined to keep going. And there’s a good reason for that! A study published recently in the Australian & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry showed that being a part of the group improves your mental health, helps you maintain a positive outlook on life, and makes you happier. How great is that, just from being around people trying to lose weight as well?
And think of all the (free!) advice you’ll be getting. By sharing what worked for you, you will help someone struggling today, and who knows, maybe tomorrow they will help you!
Moreover, a group setting encourages healthy competition, and who doesn’t want to lose the most weight? Your competitive nature is only an asset on a journey to Better You. If your friend is going to a spin class, how could you not go and fall behind?
And, speaking of goals, wouldn’t it suck to make a public commitment and then blow it? That’s the other reason groups are fantastic reinforcers of your promises, because breaking one doesn’t feel good. And, whenever it gets hard, there’s always someone there to lift you up and encourage you to keep going!
So, what are you waiting for? Grab a girlfriend or two, a family member, and make a commitment to each other! And if you don’t have anyone at hand to start the journey with, there’s always fantastic online groups, like our BetterMe Weight Loss Support Community, that will connect you to thousands of people, so you’re never alone again!
