But that doesn&#8217;t mean that eating in these moments is healthy or helpful. So, before reaching for food, practice these five investigative steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Question_Your_Hunger\"><\/span><b>Question Your Hunger<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a scale of 1 to 10, rate your hunger on a level of one being extremely hungry and ten being stuffed (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/9\/12\/e032248\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). For example, if you have had food or drink within the last two hours, or feel &#8220;stuffed&#8221; from the snacks at work, then there&#8217;s a good chance that you&#8217;re not actually hungry. If it&#8217;s been more than three hours since your last meal, ask yourself:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is my stomach growling?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Am I thinking about what I&#8217;ll eat next?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do I feel light-headed or tired (low blood sugar)?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does my stomach feel empty (indicating muscle contractions)?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Am I salivating over smells passing by (indicating that my body is secreting digestive juices)?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you answered yes to any of the questions, then it&#8217;s likely that you are actually hungry. If you catch yourself reaching for a snack without hunger, stop and think about the trigger for this behavior. For example, maybe you got up to get some water but instead ended up opening the cabinet where cookies are stored. Or maybe, it&#8217;s the time of day when you always used to have a candy bar.
